Aylesbury’s Festival of Lights is an annual celebration in the heart of the town, and we invite you to come along on Sunday 27 September.
2026 marks the 10th year of this community event, which is inspired by the traditions of Diwali. Step into the walled gardens and historic rooms of the Discover Bucks Museum to be transported into the wonders of Indian culture.
Diwali is an uplifting and enlightening celebration where people come together to enjoy food, music, dance, and social connection. We aim to create that spirit for an afternoon of family fun for people of all ages, backgrounds and beliefs in the centre of Aylesbury.
What Can You Expect If You Join Aylesbury’s Festival Of Lights?
The event begins at midday, with traditional prayers of gratitude. These are followed by an afternoon of exquisite music and dance performances. As we are celebrating in September, we have more time for a packed programme, so expect a few surprise additions!
Expect the energising beat of Dhol drummers to bring a collective rhythm to the event. Then, delight in the adorned costumes and routines of the most amazing dance groups. Participation is encouraged, so take the opportunity to learn a few Bollywood moves!
Inside the museum, your creativity will be sparked with craft activities, henna painting, and the chance to try on a sari. You’ll be surrounded by beautiful displays, including richly coloured fabrics, glowing lanterns and rangoli patterns, which are intricate designs formed from coloured powders and rice.
Food is at the heart of every Hindu celebration. Discover the flavours and aromas of India from our popular street food vendors, chai and samosa stalls, and treat stands. I’d recommend dipping your samosa into the tamarind sauce or trying a deliciously spicy paneer wrap!

Light Parade at Dusk
The finale of the event is a light parade as the sun begins to go down. Lanterns that have been made in advance and on the day are carried on a short route through the town centre. Accompanied by music, this parade signifies the strength of light over dark, as we move into autumn. So, come and be a part of this positive community collective.

You need to book a ticket to join the celebrations. However, thanks to our generous sponsors, the Rothschild Foundation, the Anson Charitable Trust, Heart of Bucks, Discover Bucks Museum, and Holy Cow Tea, ticket prices are just £3 per person if you book in advance up 26th September and £5 at the door
